Notes on Basic 3-Manifold Topology

چکیده
These notes, originally written in the 1980’s, were intended as the beginning of a book on 3 manifolds, but unfortunately that project has not progressed very far since then. A few small revisions have beenmade in 1999 and 2000, butmuchmore remains to be done, both in improving the existing sections and in adding more topics. The next topic to be added will probably be Haken manifolds in §3.2. For any subsequent updates which may be written, the interested reader should check my webpage:

A Geometry Preserving Kernel over Riemannian Manifolds
Abstract- Kernel trick and projection to tangent spaces are two choices for linearizing the data points lying on Riemannian manifolds. These approaches are used to provide the prerequisites for applying standard machine learning methods on Riemannian manifolds. Classical kernels implicitly project data to high dimensional feature space without considering the intrinsic geometry of data points. ...
متن کاملMorse theory, graphs, and string topology
In these lecture notes we discuss a body of work in which Morse theory is used to construct various homology and cohomology operations. In the classical setting of algebraic topology this is done by constructing a moduli space of graph flows, using homotopy theoretic methods to construct a virtual fundamental class, and evaluating cohomology classes on this fundamental class. By using similar c...
متن کاملAn Introduction to 3-manifolds and Their Fundamental Groups
In these lecture notes we will give a quick introduction to 3-manifolds, with a special emphasis on their fundamental groups. In the first section we will show that given k ≥ 4 any finitely presented group is the fundamental group of a closed, oriented k–dimensional manifold. This is not the case for 3-manifolds. For example we will see that Z,Z/n,Z ⊕ Z/2 and Z are the only abelian groups which...
متن کاملThe Differential Topology of Loop Spaces
This is an introduction to the subject of the differential topology of the space of smooth loops in a finite dimensional manifold. It began as background notes to a series of seminars given at NTNU and subsequently at Sheffield. The topics covered are: the smooth structure of the space of smooth loops; constructions involving vector bundles; submanifolds and tubular neighbourhoods; and a short ...
متن کاملHomology manifolds
The study of the local-global geometric topology of homology manifolds has a long history. Homology manifolds were introduced in the 1930s in attempts to identify local homological properties that implied the duality theorems satisfied by manifolds [23, 56]. Bing’s work on decomposition space theory opened new perspectives. He constructed important examples of 3-dimensional homology manifolds w...
